I’ve just finished teaching the last round of students for the end of the academic year, so for most they’re on summer holidays now.
Traditionally I wouldn’t have any summer students at all (Maybe a couple of sporadic arrangements) so would have a pretty much jobless summer. This was both fantastic and depressing. No income… but plenty of time to enjoy the weather… It was the end of summer 2020 I last suffered from burnout. I’d had no income for most of the summer and I’d found new confidence in what I was wearing, so had been spending despite the situation.
Before child I would go on random road trips with and without the husband. Most notably was summer 2016 when Pokémon GO came out. We had a lodger that summer, and we used to go chasing Pokémon while the husband (who had no interest in Pokémon) was at work! All the summers after that were with baby or small child, but I still tried to get out where I could. We liked going for walks, sitting on the beach, but most of the time I found it cooler in the house too..
Summer 2020 was different though. We were still in lockdown for half of it. I had barely any work thanks to that. I’d scrambled for whatever students were able to get online and we made do with what we could. I had lots of time (but with child) that summer.
I used the chance to dive deep into self development. What better time and space? By the time summer was over, I started to work out what my purpose was. My why, and my motivation to keep going!
NEVER GIVE UP! That was my mantra, I was always known as being diligent, and I was always determined. I was just shy and quiet, and didn’t know how to find my voice…
Summer 2021 is completely different. For the first time I have opportunities to work on, I’ve got a whole community to entertain with my music and creativity, I have a bit more consistency with teaching, I’ll be expanding my piano business in September, I’ll be co-author of a published book in October, and my brand as the Tropic Pianist Gamer is getting more and more visible by the day!
