Recently I was introducing myself to my youngest ever student. He’s 4 years old! When I was a child, I was only allowed to start piano lessons when I was aged 7 due to the size of my hands, but I also had the advantage that I could already read music, having played recorder since the age of 3, and violin from the age of 4. I figured that if he’s too small for the piano, I’ve always got a back up mini keyboard, and ways of teaching him to read music initially! He’ll grow into the full size stuff!
I am fully DBS checked, and have worked with children since the start of being self employed as a piano teacher. I may have scared a few of the youngest off before as I always used to wear black generally, and was trying to be smart! (If that was your child, I’m sorry, I was still really shy back then!)
Having found my confidence in late 2020, this year I was ready to get out there a bit more. Promote my business for what I wanted it to be.
Being the “Tropic Pianist Gamer” means that I’m unique in what I do, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t focus on specific things – First and foremost I am a musician. My uniqueness means that since April 2021 I can offer an exclusive studio experience (See “Studio Gallery” on home page) and also dress more confidently!
In summer 2020, with my confidence came body confidence! I was no longer afraid to wear colours. I stopped wearing black all the time, so started my addiction of “Popsy” dresses!
Every time I go live in my Den (or most of the time) I will wear a different Popsy Dress! People find me more approachable and friendly, but of course we were in lockdown so going out in public was another scary thing for me!
I started wearing certain dresses for my piano students, just to brighten up the dark times a bit! Whether they were online or in person, I’d put a dress on!
This recent new student was so young. Only a few months older than my own child. I knew from experience they were likely to be shy, so I figured I should wear a dress! Which one? Planets? Dinosaurs? Wizards?
I actually had an accountability call the same morning, so I asked the other ladies what I should go for. They voted for Dinosaurs! What little person doesn’t like dinosaurs?! (I know I did when I was that age!)
That was decided then! “Velma” was the outfit of choice!
Needless to say, it went down a storm. The little boy was very shy when he arrived, but by the end he was smiling away, and to make him feel more “at home” we started with “boom” (bottom note) and “squeak” (top note) after middle C.
The parting words were not only “see you next week” but also “I promise to wear my dinosaur dress again next week!” *Enthusiastic nod*
